Mrs. Swanson was born on March 9, 1917 in Seattle Washington to Ruth and Arthur Boag. Helen’s family moved to Hoquiam, WA from Seattle where Helen attended Washington Grade School and later Weatherwax High when the family relocated to Aberdeen. Helen graduated High school in 1936.
Helen then went to Pullman, and attended Washington State University until her brother entered college. The family was unable to support two students in college so Helen returned home and enrolled in beauty school. She had always loved to style hair for family and friends and had a talent for it.
During this time Charles Swanson entered the picture and they were married October 6, 1940. The couple settled in Hoquiam where Charles worked as a grocer and they began their family. As time passed she joined the First Presbyterian Church and her favorite Organization, P.E.O.
Helen began playing golf and was very proud to have made three hole-in-ones. Gardening was also one of her passions and Begonias being her specialty, provided winning ribbons in several competitions.
Chuck joined in her love of golf and they became members of the Grays Harbor Country Club and played at many courses around the country. The couple was fortunate to take trips throughout Europe, Asia, South America as well as several cruises in the Caribbean and Pacific. Helen enjoyed going to the library and researching all the interesting places they would visit on their vacations.
After Charles died, Helen moved to Panorama city in Lacey WA where she spent her last 6 years enjoying new experiences and meeting many new people. Helen would often say that her mother always wanted to live at Panorama but didn’t get the chance.
Surviving members of her family are daughter Charlene and son in law Bob Thompson; sons Steven and Mark Swanson; four grandchildren, Eric Veloni, Gail Veloni, Helen Ruth and Madeline Swanson.
A private family service was held with interment at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park.
